Sexual and Asexual reproduction

Sexual reproduction
sexual reproduction, the production of new organisms by the combination of genetic information of two individuals of different sexes. In most species the genetic information is carried on chromosomes in the nucleus of reproductive cells called gametes, which then fuse to form a diploid zygote.

-The process of sexual reproduction occurs by the formation of gametes with a haploid set of chromosomes.

-Sexual reproduction is common in higher organisms such as multicellular animals.

In sexual reproduction, two parents donate genes to their offspring through a process called fertilization.  In fertilization, male and female sex cells or gametes fuse to form a single cell called a zygote. A zygote grows and develops by mitosis into a fully functioning individual.

  • Asexual reproduction

Asexual reproduction does not involve sex cells or fertilisation . Only one parent is required, unlike sexual reproduction which needs two parents. As a result, the offspring are genetically identical to the parent and to each other. They are clones

-Examples of asexual reproduction are seen in bacteria, most fungi

-The body of the asexually reproducing organism often does not have defined reproductive organs.
